The announcement was made by Stephen Byers, British Trade & Industry Secretary. The Millenium Products initiative was launched by British Prime Minister Tony Blair in late 1997 to identify and promote those British products, designs and services which will change life in the 21st century. The United Kingdom Design Council selected winning products based upon innovation, creativity, and whether the product is pioneering in its field.
